How to Tackle the Mould Around Your Windows

Blog

Do you notice that mould is especially common around your windows? This is because it's an area where cold air meets warm air, resulting in condensation and dampness. While you can't do a lot about the temperature differences, there are some ways you can treat the mould and prevent it from returning.

DIY Mould Removal

There are plenty of avenues for you to explore when it comes to DIY mould removal. Commercial products contain substances that kill off mould and prevent it from returning. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of vinegar and water or bleach and water to tackle the area. After applying your substance of choice, scrub the area using a hard brush to remove the mould and its spores. Use a dry rag to remove the bulk of the moisture after. If the area of mould is very large, though, you may want to contact a professional who can use stronger substances.

Specialist Sealants

Take a look at the sealant around your windows to see if there are any gaps or breakages. If there are, you may want to replace it using an anti-mould sealant instead. Such sealants usually contain biocides that can prevent mould from gathering in the area. While you can't guarantee it will prevent mould altogether, the right type of sealant will significantly reduce one of the entry points where growth can occur. As a result, you'll be less likely to see it return.

Use a Dehumidifier

Mould loves to grow in moist conditions. If you find that one particular window is more problematic than others, try using a small dehumidifier in the area. Using a fan, your dehumidifier will draw warm air currents towards it. It then transforms that warm air into cooler air and releases it back into the room. If you don't have an electrical source close to the window, try using an absorbent dehumidifier that doesn't require electricity instead.

Turn to Professionals

When mould is growing rapidly or your efforts don't have any effect, it may be best to use a professional mould removal service instead. Mould that keeps returning or is difficult to remove may be coming from beneath the surface of your walls. When this happens, you'll need a professional to perform a deep clean and to offer advice on how to remove it permanently. Once you're aware of what the source is, you can tackle it and look forward to a mould-free way of living.
